Energy Star Rated Sustainable HomeEnergy Star Rated Sustainable Home: The Schmidt Home

The Schmidt family has built a new "sustainable" home that earned one of the lowest Home Energy Rating System (HERS) ratings to date. Utilizing sustainable materials, geothermal heating and cooling, supplemental solar power, and energy-efficient windows and appliances, their home earned a 40 HERS rating. Note: Any "average" new home built to code standards will typically earn a 100 score.

Kansas Governor's Mansion Energy AuditEnergy Audit: Kansas Governor's Mansion

When asked to perform an energy audit for the Kansas Governor's Mansion in Topeka, Kansas, Performance Plus Homes was honored.

Considering that the mansion was originally built in 1928, the complex structure of the building presented some unique challenges. After the energy audit, we were able to make many recommendations for structural and functional improvements that will help keep this historic site more energy efficient and comfortable for years to come.

Energy Star HomeEnergy Star Home:  Ezell-Morgan Construction, Lawrence, KS

This Energy Star Certified home is a five-bedroom, four-bath walk-out ranch constructed utilizing a geothermal heat pump, all electric appliances, polyicynene foam, spray-in insulation, a heat recovery ventilation system, fluorescent lighting, and high-performance, low-emissivity windows.

The home earned a HERS rating of 52, as determined by inspection and testing from Performance Plus Homes (in order to qualify for ENERGY STAR the HERS index must be below 86). The home is all electric and its electric bills were predicted to be $1,330 per year. The bills for an average new home would be 48% higher. Performance Plus Homes and builder Ezell-Morgan Construction collaborated to provide the low Energy Star rating for this home.
